Even today, a barebones version of the i3 NUC system <a href="http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16856102001" style="color: #05408f; outline: none; text-decoration: none;" target="_blank">still costs almost $300</a>, and that's without memory, storage, Wi-Fi and an operating system, which could easily add a couple hundred bucks.</div><div style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 17px; line-height: 25px; margin-bottom: 20px; outline: none; text-align: justify;"><a href="" style="color: #05408f; outline: none;"><img border="0" src="http://static.techspot.com/articles-info/698/images/Image_08S.jpg" style="border: 0px; max-width: 100%; outline: none;" /></a></div><div style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 17px; line-height: 25px; margin-bottom: 20px; outline: none; text-align: justify;">Recognizing this issue, Intel introduced <a href="http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16856102004" style="color: #05408f; outline: none; text-decoration: none;" target="_blank">an option based on the 1.1GHz Celeron 847</a>, but that chip is awfully slow and at $180, the barebones box it comes inside still isn't a particularly good value. To date, we think it's safe to say that NUC is a cool idea that has been hamstrung by poor hardware choices and unattractive prices -- a trend that Gigabyte hopes to buck with its new NUC offerings.</div><div style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 17px; line-height: 25px; margin-bottom: 20px; outline: none; text-align: justify;">Gigabyte's pint-sized "Brix" systems come in four different processor configurations, including the 1.8GHz Celeron 1037U, 1.9GHz Core i3-3227U, 1.8-2.7GHz Core i5-3337U and 2-3.1GHz Core i7-3537U. Those seem much more powerful than Intel's lineup and that's certainly enough to warrant our attention, but it's worth noting that Brix also offers more USB 3.0 ports and Wi-Fi out of the box.</div><div style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 17px; line-height: 25px; margin-bottom: 20px; outline: none; text-align: justify;">Granted, while the Core i5-3337U-powered Brix system is faster than any of Intel's NUC options, it's also more expensive at $420 -- a sum that will increase well beyond $500 after you purchase memory, storage and an operating system. Keep in mind, you could purchase a <a href="http://www.techspot.com/products/laptops/?search=CoreI5-3337U" style="color: #05408f; outline: none; text-decoration: none;">Core i5-3337U-based laptop</a> from Dell or Asus for under $600, which would provide a similar feature set, just in a mobile package instead of a tiny box. We have tested the $420 Core i5 version (XM11-3337), which is $100 less than the i7 model and $100 more than the i3. Both processors are identical with a few minor exceptions. The A10-6800K is clocked slightly higher at 4.10GHz as opposed to 3.80GHz, while the Turbo frequency has been boosted from 4.20GHz to 4.40GHz.</div><div style="background-color: white; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 22px; margin-bottom: 16px; outline: none;">The Radeon HD 7660D has been replaced with the 8670D for the A10-6800K, offering a boost in operating clock speed from 800MHz to 844MHz. All of them feature just 1MB of L2 cache. We say that because the only other phones close to it are the Lumia 920 and the Galaxy Note II. The Lumia 920 is not much of a competition, unless all you’re looking for is a good low-light capable camera, and the Note II’s size isn’t for everyone. This leaves the ZL sitting pretty at around Rs 36,000. One may argue that it’s best to put a little more and get the Z, which is more feature rich and comes with the tempting IP55/57 certification. But is it really worth it? How much has Sony really compromised with the ZL in order to make it more affordable? Let’s find out. <br style="margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px;" /><br style="margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px;" /><strong style="margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px;">Design and build </strong><br style="margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px;" />Upfront, the ZL looks quite a bit like the Z, except for the wider ear piece grille and a front camera that finds a new home at the bottom of the handset – a first we’ve come across. The handset also features the same scratch-resistant and shatterproof glass along with the screen guard that comes pre-installed. The overall size of the ZL is much smaller than the Z, but Sony has kept the screen size the same. This gives the illusion of a larger screen since the bezel is shaved down quite a bit from all sides. The textured back leaves your phone free from scratches and requires less upkeep. The camera, LED flash and speaker grille are placed in a similar fashion as the Z. The microSIM and microSD card slots are now placed at the bottom of the phone under a flap. Overall, we were impressed with the design and finish of the ZL and feel it’s a lot better than the Xperia Z in terms of ease of use and ergonomics. <br style="margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px;" /><br style="margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px;" /><strong style="margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px;">Features</strong><br style="margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px;" />The display is exactly the same as the one on the Xperia Z, only a little brighter and with more vivid colours. The viewing angles are still pretty average and sunlight legibility is not the best. You also have the option to expand it via the hot-swap card slot. The other app is Sony LIV, which streams local TV serials. The headphones have a snug fit and produce deep bass while providing good noise isolation. The Nikon Coolpix L27 and L28 are two budget point-and-shoot digital cameras out of the 17 models that Nikon launched around a month ago. Both models are stylish and compact, come in attractive body colours and feature 5x zoom lens. What sets them apart is the resolution. The L27 has a 16.1 megapixel sensor, which is a common feature these days. At a whopping 20.1 megapixel, the L28 has the highest resolution in its class—sounds interesting? Weighing in at 164 grams (with batteries), it’s quite portable and doesn’t burden the pocket. The camera is available in four colours. Go in for pink or silver if you like light shades. Prefer dark? Go in for all-black or maroon. Note that only the front part of the shell (including the sides) is coloured and sports glossy finish. The rear half bearing the LCD monitor and control panel is matte black. The front of the camera features the AF-assist light and a tiny flash strobe in one corner. The lens of the L28 starts from 26 mm and extends to 130 mm, which translates to 5x optical zoom. The zoom comes in handy to shoot close-ups from short distances. It doesn’t offer much than allowing you to point at the subject and shoot. You can choose from four shooting modes—Auto, Easy Auto, Scene and Smart Portrait. The Easy Auto mode analyses the subject and scene and uses optimal settings. All you can do is just adjust the EV, enable or disable flash and use the self-timer. The Auto mode is equivalent to Program mode minus ISO setting. You can set the white balance, use the burst mode and colour options in addition to what’s available in Easy Auto mode. Colour options include Vivid, Black-and-white, Sepia and Cyanotype. The Scene mode has 18 presets including the usual ones such as Portrait, Landscape, Sports, Sunset, Food, Fireworks, Backlight and Pet. Smart Portrait is a notch better than the Portrait scene preset. You can use skin softening and smile timer (releases the shutter when the subject smiles). The camera uses face detection for this feature. A useful feature is the option to crop photos when you’re viewing them. You simply have to zoom into the part of the frame you wish to crop and then press the Menu button to save what you see on the camera’s screen as a separate file. We would have liked if there was an option to apply colour effects to photos in playback mode. Here, you can only apply skin softening, rotate the frame and rescale the photo to 640 x 480 pixels (Small Picture). The lack of too many controls explains this camera is for those who want a no-nonsense point-and-shoot. Even if you’re a novice, you’ll get used to this camera in a matter of minutes. The quality of the shell and buttons is very good and the curvaceous design is spot on. The camera is perfect for single-handed use, but we suggest using the wrist strap. The bulge around the battery compartment and a dimpled thumb grip next to the video recording button lend a good grip. You’ll find it comfortable to use even if you have large hands.
