We say that because the only other phones close to it are the Lumia 920 and the Galaxy Note II. The Lumia 920 is not much of a competition, unless all you’re looking for is a good low-light capable camera, and the Note II’s size isn’t for everyone. This leaves the ZL sitting pretty at around Rs 36,000. One may argue that it’s best to put a little more and get the Z, which is more feature rich and comes with the tempting IP55/57 certification. But is it really worth it? How much has Sony really compromised with the ZL in order to make it more affordable? Let’s find out. <br style="margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px;" /><br style="margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px;" /><strong style="margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px;">Design and build </strong><br style="margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px;" />Upfront, the ZL looks quite a bit like the Z, except for the wider ear piece grille and a front camera that finds a new home at the bottom of the handset – a first we’ve come across. The handset also features the same scratch-resistant and shatterproof glass along with the screen guard that comes pre-installed. The headphones have a snug fit and produce deep bass while providing good noise isolation. It is a lot more responsive than the EAFT Destiny tablet. Navigating and typing on the tablet felt quite smooth. The 9.7-inch display has a resolution of 1024x768 pixels, which gets the job done, and we do wish the resolution were bumped up to 1280x800 pixels. Reading text, browsing the Internet, playing games, all looked good on the display. The viewing angles of the screen to are nice. Playing games and running apps on it felt nice and the display was quite crisp.</div><div style="background-color: white; color: #191919; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 16px; text-align: justify;">Videos on the other hand are a different story on the Auxus CoreX4 3G. Considering the power under the hood, we tried to play an .MKV 720p rip and the playback lagged and stuttered. The frame rate dropped and the experience wasn’t the best. HD MP4 and SD AVI videos however ran very smoothly on the tablet.</div><div style="background-color: white; color: #191919; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 16px; text-align: justify;">The audio output however isn’t the best. It is extremely soft for multimedia and has an acceptable level when it comes to apps. The iberry Auxus CoreX4 3G also boasts of the ability to make calls and access data via a 3G SIM card. The calling feature from the tablet feels like a gimmick. There is no earpiece on the tablet and the voice coming from the loudspeaker is really soft. We used it in a closed room where the ambient noise was in our control and we still had difficulty listening to the voice. The mic too is quite weak at picking up our voice. We had to either talk really loudly or keep the tablet really close to our mouth. We recommend using a headset if you plan to use the tablet to make calls.</div><div style="background-color: white; color: #191919; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 16px; text-align: justify;">We played a lot of Angry Birds Star Wars, Temple Run 2 and Dead Trigger on the iberry Auxus CoreX4 3G. With the power under the hood we thought the games would run extremely smoothly and our expectations were matched with Temple Run and Angry Birds. But despite the quad-core processor, Dead Trigger lagged when the action got quite intense onscreen. We have seen tablets like the Videocon VT10 that ran Dead Trigger a lot more smoothly. Transferring files from your Mac or PC to the tablet is as simple as plug, copy and paste.</div><div style="background-color: white; color: #191919; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 16px; text-align: justify;">Apart from testing games and playback capabilities of the CoreX4 3G tablet, we also ran benchmarks. One nice touch here is an illuminated transparent strip placed at the bottom of the screen. It notifies you about the events such as new messages and missed calls.<br /><br style="border: none; box-sizing: border-box; font-size: 15px; margin: 0px; outline: none; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;" />A volume rocker, camera shutter, and lock button are placed on the right side. The micro-USB port sits on the left, while there's a 3.5 mm jack on the top. The designers have slapped faux-metal strips on all four sides, which hamper the aesthetics of the phone. And if that wasn’t bad enough, an unpleasant textured-pattern has been added to the back of the device. I know, it helps with the grip, but then the soft-touch finish would have been a much better option. Like every other large screen phone (yes, phablet, if you must), the ZL is not ideal for single-handed use. In terms of build quality, this handset isn't IP57 certified like the Z, meaning that it isn’t dust or water resistent. The brightness is good enough, but the colours look a little washed out. Another annoyance is that the whites don’t look accurate, they look a bit yellowish. So rather than the higher pixel-density, Sony should have delivered better colour reproduction and contrast. Sony's handheld gaming console PS Vita sports an excellent OLED screen. I wonder what stops them from using those panels for high-end phones. For screen protection Sony has used a toughened glass. However, it's not the Corning Gorilla Glass, which is widely regarded as best in the business.<br /><br style="border: none; box-sizing: border-box; font-size: 15px; margin: 0px; outline: none; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;" />In terms of hardware, the Xperia ZL is one of the most powerful handsets in the market. It features a quad-core Snapdragon S4 chipset clocked at 1.5 GHz, and there's 2 GB of RAM. For photography you get a 13 megapixel auto-focus camera with Exmor RS sensor and LED flash, 16 GB internal storage, microSD card slot, and 2370 mAh battery. Beyond that though, I personally didn't find the interface to be aesthetically pleasing. Sony hasn't even bothered to maintain uniformity in icons. The phone offers "small apps" feature that allows you to use calculator, recorder, timer etc in windowed mode. For instance, you can take notes while playing a video in the background. Interesting concept, but I doubt if many will find it useful. Pressing the Home button for a long time brings up Google Now. This feature is supposed to deliver all the relevant information in one place. Graphics intensive games such as Dead Trigger run without a hitch. The ZL comes with Google Chrome instead of the default browser. Its page rendering speeds are impressive. The tabs are supported, but Adobe Flash is a no-go. In AnTutu benchmark, the Xperia ZL scored 20,660. It's not far off from the recently reviewed HTC One's 23,412. The Superior auto mode comes to the rescue when you're not sure when to activate night mode or HDR. The handset's camera UI gives access to the shutter button and camcorder at the same time, which means you can snap a picture while recording a video. The clips are saved in MP4 format, and offer consistent frame-rate. The ZL is one of the few handsets to record 1080p videos with HDR. If the contacts list gets crowded, you can purge them using various filters. After using it for a week, I feel that the onscreen keyboard could have used a better design. There's too much space left between two adjacent characters. In our video loop test, it managed to power the device for only 5 hours and 30 minutes. On the flipside, the screen is just about average. Priced at Rs 34,900, the handset lacks flaunt value. So unless Sony brings its price under 30k mark, the ZL is going to be a hard sell. And if you're planning to spend around 35k, then it makes sense to shell out Rs 3000 more and go for the Xperia Z instead. Those willing to look beyond Android can also consider Nokia Lumia 920, which costs Rs 35,500 including a wireless (induction) charger and sports one of the best smartphone cameras ever.</div><div style="border: none;
